I'm a good parent. Really, I am.....
I love Noggin's new commercials. They're designed to make parents feel comfortable about sitting their kids in front of the TV all day. Do parents really fall for this? Are there really moms out there who think that Noggin really is like preschool on TV? I like educational programming, and definitely prefer these shows over SpongeBob for Caden. Not for myself, though, I like the dumb shows best. I also know that there are going to be times when yes, you do turn on the TV to entertain your child. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as you do understand that this does not qualify as preschool. There is one commercial that actually shows a mother telling her daughter that it's time for preschool, then turns on the TV for her. Who believes this crap? The irony of this situation lies within the fact that as I write this, my kid is currently sitting in front of the TV. My excuses:
1. He's very sick, so we can't go out and he needs to stay calm and horizontal anyway.
2. We've already played with puzzles and trains for hours today, it's ok to veg out for a bit.
3. I'm just a terrible, selfish mother.
At least I know that it's not a good thing to have him watch TV, and I don't try to fool myself into believing it. I own my guilt. But uh, I better go.

My mom always used Sesame Street as a substitute for preschool and I turned out just fine. Really.
Well, I don't know the show but I know the kind of shows you mean. It's their way of getting kids to watch, because they know the show isn't entertaining enough as it is - they have to pretend it is educational.
Hope the little lad is feeling better soon...
And you're a wonderful mother, CL...
I totally agree CL. I have been buying Baby Einstein dvds for my 2 year old. She loves them. I love the fact that there is a repeat button so that when the show ends it starts up again. This helps when you are cleaning the house.
CL, I think there is a huge difference between parking your kids in front of the TV all day every day and letting him rest and watch TV when he is sick. You sound like a good parent to me! In fact, if you would like a daughter I will be happy to fill in. I like puzzles and trains!
aw, you sound like a great mom.
anyway, the tv's not so bad. that's how i learned to speak english.
see? i no have no engrish plobrem.
learry, i don't.
i grew up on sesame street. i only started school at um.. 5 or something. and then it was a half day.
as long as he doesn't watch scary things like teletubbies or those boobah things, he should turn out just fine. get some mr. rogers' neighbourhood dvds (are they out??) and if you want i'll send you mr. dressup (canadian show) that one kicked ass! he'll be fine! you're a terrific mummy.
well... except for all that time you spend chatting online and nelecting your kid. i mean, why do you think he got sick. really!

Oh, there are *MUCH* badder things a parent can do than letting kids watch a little bit of Telly!
Me thinks you *ARE* a good parent just by the fact that you worry that you aren't!
We grew up on TV and survived. Even my hippie no tv watching friend lets her kids watch videos periodically. I think the kid is safe.
Ah CL, TV at the right time is a good thing. You obviously know the difference. You sound like a great Mom.
Grace's comments always crack me up.
I miss Fraggle Rock....
